Common Questions About Our Toothbrush

How are the Boar Bristles Sourced?

We use ethically sourced, cruelty-free boar bristles that are collected through natural grooming processes.

These bristles are typically gathered during seasonal shedding or brushing from domesticated boars raised on small farms where animal welfare is a priority.

No animals are harmed or slaughtered for the bristles. Our partners follow strict ethical sourcing guidelines to ensure humane treatment and sustainability.

We believe that even small daily essentials—like your toothbrush—should align with conscious, responsible choices.

How are the Bristles Sterilised? Are harsh chemicals used?

No harsh chemicals are ever used. The bristles are first sterilized using high-pressure steam at over 120°C, which effectively kills bacteria and pathogens without the need for synthetic treatments.

After that, they’re soaked in a mild hydrogen peroxide solution—a disinfectant commonly used in food and medical settings—to further sanitize and gently lighten the bristles.

We never use bleach or industrial chemicals. Once cleaned, the bristles are thoroughly rinsed and dried at high temperatures, leaving them safe, hygienic, and ready for everyday use. The result: clean, natural bristles—free from toxins or synthetic residues.

Are the bristles too hard on the teeth or gums?

Not at all. While boar bristles may feel a little different at first compared to synthetic ones, they’re naturally soft to medium-soft and designed to be gentle on both teeth and gums.

Many of our customers have reported that brushing with these bristles actually helped reduce gum sensitivity and even stopped gum bleeding over time—especially compared to the harsher plastic bristles they were using before. The natural taper and flexibility of boar bristles allow for a comfortable, thorough clean without causing irritation or damage.

They’re a great option for anyone with sensitive gums or anyone looking to switch to a brush that’s both effective and kind to their mouth.

What's different about our toothbrush?

Many so-called “eco-friendly” toothbrushes on the market only go halfway — they feature a bamboo handle, but still use nylon bristles. These nylon bristles are petroleum-based and known to leach harmful chemicals like BPA, PFAS, and other hormone disruptors, making them just as problematic for your health as conventional plastic brushes.

And while bamboo sounds like a sustainable choice, most of these brushes struggle with one major flaw: they don’t dry properly. The result? Mold buildup and a short lifespan.

That’s where the Instinctive™ Boar Bristle Toothbrush stands apart.

Our brush is thoughtfully designed to dry fast and clean. It stands upright on its own and is finished with a non-toxic, water-repellent seal at the base — helping prevent mold, extend durability, and make your oral care truly clean from start to finish.

Why are plastic toothbrushes so bad?

Most toothbrushes are made with nylon bristles and plastic handles — both derived from petroleum and commonly containing BPA, phthalates, PFAS, and other chemicals linked to hormone disruption and cancer.

Every time you brush, nylon bristles can shed microplastic fragments that are easily absorbed or swallowed. Over time, these fragments accumulate — with studies showing the average person may ingest up to 88,000 microplastic particles per year from their toothbrush alone.

This means you're unknowingly exposed to harmful compounds daily — from a product meant to support your health.

And beyond your health, there's the planet. Each year, over 23 billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown out globally — creating 500+ million pounds of waste that won’t break down for centuries. Much of it ends up in landfills, rivers, and oceans, polluting ecosystems and harming marine life.

The Hidden Danger Lurking In Your Bathroom

Every Time You Brush, You're Unknowingly Swallowing Plastic

Your toothbrush seems harmless, but here's the terrifying truth: conventional nylon bristles break off microscopic plastic fragments every single time you brush.

These microplastic particles are absorbed and swallowed, meaning you're unknowingly dosing yourself with toxic compounds twice daily.

What These "Hidden Toxins" Are Actually Doing To Your Body

Hormone Disruption

BPA, PFAS, and phthalates from plastic bristles act as endocrine disruptors, potentially affecting fertility, metabolism, and mood

Systemic Contamination

Microplastics accumulate in your bloodstream and organs, with unknown long-term health consequences

Daily Chemical Exposure

Every brush delivers a dose of cancer-causing compounds directly into your mouth

Cellular Damage

These synthetic chemicals can interfere with normal cellular function and hormone production

The Scale Of This Problem Is Staggering

1 billion plastic toothbrushes are dumped in US landfills every single year. But the environmental damage is just the beginning - the real crisis is what's happening inside your body.

The longer you wait, the more plastic you ingest.

"But I Use A Bamboo Toothbrush..."

Think you're safe with your "eco-friendly" bamboo brush? Check the bristles. Most bamboo toothbrushes still use nylon (plastic) bristles, meaning you're still exposing yourself to the same microplastic contamination.

It's time to stop unknowingly poisoning yourself twice a day.

I got these for a great price and even then they’ve pleasantly surprised me. They come individually boxed which feels nice and sanitary. I actually use them in the kitchen for hard to reach, stubborn stains and stuck on food. They’re low key looking and don’t stick out the way a regular plastic toothbrush would. Highly recommend

I originally bought this product to reduce my use of plastic, however, since using I've had excellent feedback from my dentist & dental hygienist on how well I’ve taken care of my teeth. Last month during my semiannual cleaning, my dental hygienist said I didn’t leave her much work to do. I will continue to use this product - for me it’s been a win-win.

I was a bit hesitant to try bamboo toothbrushes at first, but I’m so glad I gave these a chance. I’ve been making an effort to reduce my plastic and microplastic use, and this toothbrush has been a great step in that direction. I’m on my first one from the pack, and it’s held up really well—only a couple of bristles came loose initially, which is totally normal given there are no harsh glues or chemicals used. The natural boar bristles feel soft yet effective, and the overall quality has a premium feel. I honestly don’t understand why more people haven’t made the switch from plastic to bamboo. The handle is smooth, comfortable to hold, and I’ve had no issues with splinters at all. If you're trying to be a little more eco-conscious in your daily routine, this is an easy, worthwhile switch. Highly recommend!

The natural boar bristles felt a little different at first, but I quickly got used to them—and I think they’ve actually helped strengthen my gums over time. I really appreciate that these are biodegradable and free from microplastics, making them a much better choice for both my health and the environment. Since it's recommended to switch out your toothbrush every 3 months anyway, it just makes sense to use one that won’t end up sitting in a landfill. Great product all around!

We decided to switch to these instead of constantly buying plastic toothbrushes, and we’re really glad we did. The bristles are soft, which we actually prefer, and while it takes a bit of getting used to—the handle kind of feels like a tongue depressor at first—it works great. The best part is knowing we’re reducing plastic waste and avoiding microplastics that can come from traditional toothbrushes. Overall, a great product that makes us feel better about our daily routine!

Husband and I agree, we like these! First time trying bamboo vs. typical plastic. Bristles are the correct softness for comfort while still providing a great clean. It's taking me a bit to get used to the feel of the flat handle compared to the larger bodied plastic brushes with rubber grips.
